evening grosbeak down....

About a month ago a flock of evening grosbeak found our three birdfeeders and decided to make this their home. I fill the feeders daily with small black oil sunflowers seeds and the grosbeak just can't get enough. They have huge appetites and are little bullies when they are feeding. It's like a gang of  hooligans have touched down with all the squabbling and beaking that goes on.  The feeders are quite close to the house because in the snowy winter months they are easier to fill. Now that the grosbeak are here, I have been reluctant to move the feeders and disturb the feeding patterns. That was until this weekend.... a  bird hit the window and I heard the thud so I rushed outside.  A male grosbeak lay there in shock. I quickly put him into a basket and warmed him up on the oven door.  He picked right up so I put the basket outside in the sun. When I went to check on him and lifted off the lid, he hopped right out and kept hopping . Obviously his wing was broken but he was still pretty lively. I decided not to stress him further by chasing him and he spent the afternoon hopping around the yard. Later on when my husband got home I pointed out the grosbeak and said to just leave him alone. Next thing I knew my husband has caught the grosbeak and had contained him once again in the basket. But first he gave my husband a nasty chomp on a  finger with his powerful beak. Then my husband peeks into the basket and the grosbeak charges out in a flurry of wings. Pablo, our old jack russell terrier is right there and that's when I started screaming. Like a nimble hunting dog he had that bird and he crunched down ......I'm moving the feeders now.....
