life can be cruel....

I don't paint that caterpillar stage very often. I consider this while I am walking around my yard with a small, propane torch burning nests of writhing, tent caterpillars. I don't even know if those tent caterpillars will turn into a lovely moth or elegant butterly. I only know those disgusting, little caterpillars will eat all of the leaves in my garden. Life can be cruel and I carry out my mission of destruction without guilt or emotion. Very odd, this detatchment from these living creatures.  It's only natural I guess. Survival of the fittest has some built in defences. Gross me out and I can torch no problem.  Next on the hit list.....slugs.

When you're living that close to the earth, life and death happens!

we were big on slug hunts in the PNW. we filled spray bottles with amonia and sprayed them. sad, cruel? possible, but they did eat alot of our yard if we did not do it. the good news is they turn into nitrogen as they decompose and you can put them right in the compost pile.

When we hatched butterflies I had to act excited about it, but really they seem like worms with legs. Am I a bad person?
