bisque firing.....

sometimes a kiln goddess, sometimes a kiln best friend.......
Pottery is a lengthy process. You really have to love taking a piece of raw earth and turning it into something special. Lots can go wrong and it always does. This is the first, bisque firing.  It is very important not to fire too hot or the glazes will not adhere properly. If you don't fire hot enough, the glazes will pit and peel. This was a perfect firing.  Now I'm glazing. The next firing is where  all the magic happens....

That is just awesome! Who made that kiln for you? I love it. I am working on designs for a brick one like the one we fired in here when we did our clay class. But now I have new ideas. I am so impressed! LL

Yep, I remember those days! Sometimes we stopped with just a bisque firing--for the sheer raw nature of it. But, yes, the final firing with the glazes is when the magic and unexpected colors happen...one never knows!

I always think of making pottery as such a full-body thing. Way cool!
