settling in.....
When we first viewed our new home in the early spring, we noticed a hollow next to the house that looked like it was marshy and wet. My husband commented that it would be easy to ditch and drain away the water so it would not be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Now that we have moved into the house, we have become aware that the little hollow has become overgrown with all sorts of interesting trees and plants and is a vibrant ecosystem. Yellow canaries nest in thickets of wild roses and ancient apple trees. Hundreds of birds call it home and help keep the dreaded mosquitoes at bay. Our first night here we heard coyotes make a kill in the small wood above the hollow. It was freaky to hear, but just another part of this vibrant landscape. The mosquitoes are being kept in check by hundreds of swallows that live in nesting boxes that were built all over the property. Every swallow consumes huge quantities of mosquitoes. The graceful swallows are working hard for us all day long. At dusk the bats swoop down from their bat houses and patrol the night. We would never consider draining the hollow now that we have lived here for a few days. Living beside the river will mean that mosquitoes will be around....... but maybe that is why this is a bird sanctuary. Keeping it natural and real means a little ying yang......yellow canaries, swallows, deer, and a few mosquitoes and coyotes too..... amazing how quickly we adapt.......settling in.......

what a beautiful new nest you have! I always heed the advice I was given about moving...don't change a thing but the placement of your furniture for a year....you need to *live* in a place before you shift it :)
Hello:
We cannot believe what a beautiful situation your new house is in. How wonderful to be surrounded with such a glorious, unspoilt, untamed landscape where the pond becomes a focal point for all manner of wildlife. Yes, mosquitoes are a trial in summer, as they are here in Hungary, but a small price to pay for everything else which you have.
And what an inspiration this countryside must be for your work. Absolutely lovely.
I thought I lived in Paradise and I see now that you do too.
Hi Dear Susan
What a magical playground of nature you have found yourself in.. I'll be looking forward to seeing all the posts and art it will inspire..
We have our fair share of mozzies here also... and bats.. a protected species here in Sydney.. although I suspect they have gotten a little lazy about their mozzie patrols.. hehe
Have a wonderful time getting to know your new surroundings... and a great weekend.. ciao xxx Julie
The beauty of where you live abounds in these photos. Life is a trade off and sounds like you (the humans) got a really great deal with the wildlife.
Linda
Lots of new animal and bird friends! How wonderful!
Sounds like the little hollow has its own microclimate. Lots of things you can plant there. I love the looks of the new place. It's going to be fun discovering all that's new there.
I love that little face peeking out of the birdhouse.
Well, this was certainly an interesting look at how it is to move into a new home! Nature has a way of taking over and all we can do about it is to choose just how much of it we can allow to move in on the perimeters of a house. You're truly living in the wild and watching it work itself out. Fascinating post, Susan.
wow, this looks like a place that will hold tons of inspiration! i love the bird houses...how they're lined up on the tree - a time share for birds! how wonderful!
looks like you got yourself a bird sanctuary. the sounds must be divine.

You are a lucky girl. Not that I can complain, but you are lucky indeed!
a beautiful realization, sue. how wonderful that you are not only able to enjoy such gorgeous surroundings, but you have the ecological presence of mind to be so sensitive to your land. big props to you!
