I don't walk them like this anymore! |
Jose and Macey even play together now..... |
Our newly adopted dog, Macey, came to us with some psychological problems. She was snarling and nasty to other dogs and sometimes people. At six years old, this aggression was not acceptable and very worrisome. Then I read a book by Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer. I realized that I was not being the strong leader of my pack of two dogs. Macey was confused by my lack of leadership and instinctively fighting for that role herself. Cesar explains how dogs need a leader. They don't aspire to be one but if leadership is not shown they have no other choice but to take it on themselves. Leaders are calmly assertive and control the pack with their energy. He recommends running with your dogs. So that is what I do every day now. Macey is leashed on the right of me and Jose is leashed on the left. We run with me in the lead and them beside or behind me. We run at least twice a day, for about half an hour each time. We can hardly believe that Macey is the same dog. She knows I am leader now and has relaxed into being a submissive follower. Her and Jose have bonded into a pack and there are no more fights. All that exercise keeps everybody relaxed. Harmony is our normal state of being. It's my new workout....I run with the dogs.....

That's awesome.I learned something new about dogs today.
Macey looks remarkably like my grand dog Gracie! But then I suppose all Jack Russells bear a resemblance to each other don't they?
You are so smart and what a blessing for Macey that you provided a wonderful home for her.
HI Susan
How wonderful Macey is settling in now and knows who her true leader is!! hehe.. and what a great way to get exercise... both pups look happy and healthy!!
Have a great day.. and 'run with the dogs!!' ciao ciao xxx Julie
Well done for sorting out that problem, our boxer dog was very dominant from being a puppy and I had to pretend to eat from his bowl and sit in his bed to make him realise he was bottom of the pack! I imagined that with an older dog it would be more difficult to change behaviour but sounds like a win win situation for you and Macey x
Wow, sounds like it's good for everyone! That dog whisperer is a smart guy.
Hooray this is wonderful news. i am so happy for you and proud you have turned the situation around so quickly. Xxxx
that is very useful knowledge to have.
What a great way to bond, exercise and train your friends! I love Ceasar, even though I don't have a dog anymore - he's such a wise man!
this is FANTASTIC! i am so glad you adopted a doggie! and i am so glad you have had the patience and understanding and care to make it work!
i adopted two kitties this year. one has had some issues. but he is coming around and getting better and better, and it has been worth the wait. he is scared, but a love bug, and getting more and more comfortable and trusting with time. YAY!
You're a genius to follow that dog whisperer's advice...kids are like dogs too...they want you to be the leader...they want you to run with them :)
How cool that it's working so well. And giving you some exercise to boot!
Yes, that pack mentality really is strong in dogs. My puppy is more assertive than my older dog, and is working his way up the ranks!
I'll bet you are a good leader!
that is so interesting. we have seen the dog whisperer on tv - communication is everything. this seems like a win win solution - everyone gets fit, has fun, and is more relaxed and happy at home!
this is such a beautiful story, sue. i love cesar millan's show and believe he is helping the human owners as much as the dogs.
good for you - hail to the pack leader!
xo
that is so interesting! adorable dogs. glad to know they know who's the boss :)
Amazing what we can learn from books. That's how I figured out how to raise my kids.
I love Macey Mae, your new addition. I am glad that she and Jose are getting along now and that she knows you are the leader.
