the bear leaves his mark every spring.....

On the back of our propery we have an old, wild cherry tree growing amongst the alder and the birch, beside our creek, Tollington Brook. (Isn't that a grand name?)  Every spring we have bears visit that tree for it's bounty of cherries. We can sit on our patio and watch them totter on it's spindly branches. We always remark how it would be wise to cut that tree down, yet we never have. The bear leaves his mark every spring.....

Interesting. Must be some mother nature instinct.

Gosh. This size of creature is such a novelty to us down here where the largest indigenous mammal is a bat!
The only ting that makes marks on our trees even vaguely like your pics is the cicada that lays its eggs in cuts through the bark... Of course they are only 3 mm deep and a cm long!
