looking up was o.k....looking down was impossible.... |
There are Mayan ruins all over the Yucatan peninsula and they are absolutely amazing to visit. They are truly awe inspiring. The Mayans did not have the wheel or metal when these highly engineered monuments were built. Nobody knows how they built them or why. They are all aligned with the sun and the stars so there was knowledge of the universe. They actually allow you to climb the pyramid at Ek Balam. It is very steep and very high. I made it to the top but could not look down. They say there are three ways to get down from the top .... zigzagging, the humiliating, on your bum method, and the fall and plummet to your death method. For awhile at the top I thought I would be plummeting.......

The only Mayan ruins I've visited was Chichen Itza. In those days you could climb the Great Pyramid. Now they don't let you (someone did do the "fall and plummet to your death descent" so they've blocked it off now). I did the humiliating bum crawl back down. I'm not proud, but I'm alive!
I remember walking up steps like that (at Tulum) without a problem. And then feeling freaked out about having to walk back down them!
Crikey, I'd opt for the humiliating on your bum method.
wow.. i've been missing all these glorious shots in your vacation posts.. the shots in the nigh time post are brilliant!!
as for these stairs.. I probably would be bum method too.. hahaha.. reminds me of being at the top of Thredbo and trying to decide whether to ski down.. or just stay and freeze to death.. hahaha
Looks like you had a wonderful time.. hope your weekend is great too .. ciao xxxx Julie
