can you go back?.......

When I was a young girl of 19 I traveled to Europe alone and came to stay in the lovely village of Matala, Crete, Greece. I  lived in a cave there for two months and met  amazing people from all over the world. Those were the days of hippies and freaks,  VW vans, Indian clothing, and great music that inspired change. It was so much fun! I went a little feral for awhile and now that I have been domesticated it seems like another life , a long, long, time ago. ....it was only 38 years ago. Matala has changed a lot from the simple village that I once loved... It would be fun to attend this reunion....but maybe disappointing too....because one thing I have learned in life is ....you can't go back.....can you?

No you can't. once it's gone , it's gone. that's why i try and live in the moment because we only get one chance in life to enjoy while we're still on this side of the ground.

Hi Susan
You know the first time I went to Venice I felt like I had discovered a fairytale land and that perhaps the wonder of it all came from somewhere in my mind.. or the excitement of the first sighting.. I have to say I worried it would not not seem as spectacular the second visit.. but I loved it just as much...

Though... I think mostly you are right.. in most situation you can't go back.. a lot of the greatness of our memories.. is that it is memories..

Still.. it might be fun in a different way...I'm looking for somewhere to go soon.. I can go for you and pretend I am you.. that will bamboozle a few people. hehehe ... Have a great weekend.. ciao xxx Julie

I think you should go. Why not? You can't go back, but you can bring what the experience added to your life. You don't go in with same expectations - just what a different feral life might add now.

I'm so jealous you did that. I never had the guts. Or the thoughts that I could.

sounds like a blast. thanks to my parents I inherited a lot of hippie ethos myself. we could certainly use a little more free thought these days...

love the may 31 tulip-inspired painting and the may 27 mixed-media work. it evokes Marcel Duchamp's 'Nude Descending a Staircase No. 2'.

thank you for your june 2 comments. I took these particular photographs many moons ago (I was barely into my teens at the time) & always found the whole darkroom experience to be equal parts adventure & nightmare...

visit again for new posts :-)

I don't think one can ever "go back" but I do know that we can reconnect. Go for it if you choose.

Hello:
What an exciting, interesting and somewhat daring past.

But no, in our view never attempt to go back. L.P. Hartley is so right - the past is another country. Go forward, as the best is yet to come!

No, you can't, but then, memories is what we are, without memories we'll be nothing.
For what you say I would have loved to be in Matala then, and I wouldn't mind going to have a look and gossip now either!

Linda in New Mexico said it better than I ever could!

After that long, I say don't go back, it will ruin your wonderful memories that you had of the place. It's different when you go back year after year, you notice the changes subtly so it doesn't have the same impact. I've done that a couple of times and came to regret it.

Nice to have those memories.
