ancient apple trees, the wild rose.....and no internet for a looooong time........

the countryside is covered in the wild rose........

an ancient apple tree provides support for the rambling rose.........

climbing the trees......
the hollow beside our house where the wild rose grows......
we have been taming the hollow....not as many mosquitoes.....but the game trail is well used by deer, coyotes, and bear.......
water is still high...but the worst of the melt is over.......
Our valley was once a place where First Nations people roamed and hunted....the Sinixt were hunter, gatherers that roamed all through out our mountainous region. After the 49th parallel was decided to be the boundary between Canada and the U.S.A. the Sinixt settled in a reservation in Washinton state. Very few First Nations people now live here. The remote, difficult to access area of the Slocan Valley has only been settled by Europeans for just over a hundred years. The fertile land had been advertised in Europe as being prime fruit growing country just waiting to be developed. A few hardy settlers arrived and planted apple trees all over the lush bench our home now sits on. Harsh winters and isolation proved too challenging for commercial enterprise so most settlers moved on.....
Our valley is still remote and isolated....so when we lost our internet connection for the last couple of weeks....I felt a tiny tinge of that isolation...panic at first...followed by acceptance...then a pleasant withdrawal into reading, gardening, creativity, early nights.......great to be back online though........I look forward to being global again......

your valley is beautiful, and i absolutely love wild roses; its amazing how the internet has changed our lives - especially if you live in a remote area. we forget until something like this gives us a reminder. glad to have you back! the Sinixt eh. are there any remnants of their time there? great that your game trail is so well used :)

Glad you're reconnected. You can always unplug! I love old roses, especially climbers. What beautiful photos of your little slice of heaven.

sometimes i wonder if the universe is telling us something when the internet goes out.....to relax, remind us of the power and beauty of nature, and solitude.

glad you have your connection back but i bet you didn't miss it much with all the beauty around you.

Seems like several people whose blogs I read have had internet problems lately.

Beautiful place to be without it, though.

Your high valley looks so much like ours, but greener. The desert creeps in here.

I've been soaking in the scent of the wild roses lately too. I can't get enough of them.

sometimes it is nice to be removed from society. and sometimes it is nice to return to it. you are lucky -- you can join it when you like (as long as the internet cooperates), and you can withdraw from it at will. lucky you! and in such beautiful surroundings, too!

Oh welcome back my dear mermaid!!!!

I love to have peace and quiet, poetry, creativity and gardening in my life. But now that we are SO CONNECTED, we do experience that feeling of isolation since now we know how much we really need each other. THANK YOU for coming to visit me today!!! Anita

OH, BTW, I love the colors in your header! Anita

Beautiful images. It is truly wonderful to see how your environment changes through the seasons. It is also amazing you are global in such a remote place - even if the connection falters and makes you appreciate the isolation occassionaly. Xxxx

Louise Doughty has never steered clear of controversial or harrowing subjects. Her last novel, the Costa shortlisted and Orange longlisted Whatever You Love followed the downward trajectory of a woman's life as she simultaneously faced the death of her daughter and divorce.Nathan
