"At the point where I'm trying to force something and it's not happening, and I'm getting frustrated with say, writing a poem, I can go and pick up the brushes and start painting. At the point where the painting seems to not be going anywhere, I go and pick up the guitar." Joni Mitchell.jpg)

Joni has inspired me my entire life. When I was just emerging from childhood, it was her poetry that resonated through those tumultuous years. I'm sure I know every word to every song. Her visual art has the same sensitivity and personal style as her music. Whenever I'm in need of insight and wisdom, I stick a Joni Mitchell CD into the stereo, turn up the volume, and listen. She always speaks to me...every time....

I absolutely agree with Joni about changing mediums when the juices just aren't flowing. Developing in many ways keeps it interesting and fresh.....

If only I could play an instrument... but I can't, so when I get frustrated by a story that is not going anywhere, I dance or run. Maybe I should start trying to learn something else, in order to have more choices. I always wanted to play the banjo!
I love Joni Mitchell, Too! Only a recent-ish discovery for me, but she has that ability, in her music, to make you a better painter because she is so obviuosly pushing the boundaries herself. I HAVE taken up guitar - not sure it's helping the painting, tho! You might like to look up Radio National Australia - had a great interview with her some time ago-perhaps last Octiber?-about her life and painting and the influence she has had on younger successful musicians. really beautiful
I like her idea for keeping it fresh :)
Very nice post. Hugs.
I do like Joni Mitchell. She had such a distinctive voice.
Susan, I feel the same way about Joni as you do. Such a treasure. Did you ever get into Laura Nyro? She wrote beautifully too.
When I get stuck on solving a creative problem, I wash dishes while I work it through in my mind...sorta the same...
Thanks for giving some great advice a la Joni. I never thought of moving onto some other sort of creativity when I have a brain block.
