Collie, the beach bum that we will always miss.....

The day we first arrived on Isla Holbox there was a "Norte" blowing and everybody was seeking shelter out of the wind and rain. We went into our hotel's barquito for our welcoming drink and met a little dog there we came to know as, Collie. We were told that he was a stray but liked to hang out in the beach bars. The kind people that ran the bars didn't seem to mind a bit. The tourists loved him and he was able to beg for his meals quite easily. The next day we were walking way up the beach when we saw him running like the wind towards the pueblo. "Is that the dog from the bar?" He looked wild and happy as he chased the birds, then stopped to chew on a fish that he found dead in the shallows. Later, as we were having lunch in the village, we looked down, and he was under our table, gently pleading with his eyes for a bite or two.  After that, Collie followed us everywhere. He loved joining us for our walkabouts and felt confident that he would be allowed into all stores and restaurants if he was with us. He was never refused. The villagers called him our adoptivo. He slept outside our door every night and greeted us in the mornings with a dance on his back legs. If we let him into the room he became very nervous and jumped at the the door to be let out. As our stay drew to an end, I became very upset at the thought of leaving Collie. I went over it in my mind again and again and tried to envision him living in Canada with us. I could not imagine taking him from Holbox. Sometimes we have to accept the world as it is, and accept that we can not, and should not intervene. I still worry....Collie, the beach bum that we will always miss.....

I think poor Collie would have missed his beach bum life in Canada. And he'd probably say "Why's it so cold here? WTF?" No, he's better off where he is -- living the dream!

Wow talk about love at first sight! I am already in love with Collie :)
How wonderful that you were able to capture those soulful eyes and transfer them so magically across these waves.
To receive love in any quantity, is so delicious, that I am not surprised Collie danced everytime he saw you :) I always dance when people say or write or do loving things with me as the lucky recipient!

I'm enjoying your series of posts about your wonderful vacation.

This dog has a compelling face. No wonder it hurt to leave him. it does sound as though he has a pretty good life under the circumstances.
