dog face and squatting man came home with us...

dog face and squatting man came from Arte Maya. Ticul, Mexico
The Flycatcher Inn is a great location ......
Flycatcher Inn, St. Elena, ..... hotel in a fan palm jungle........
Santiago's family has lived here for generations. He has carved amazing trails into the jungle......
Owners of the Flycatcher, Kristine is an American that married local, Mayan, Santiago 20 years ago
Andre, owner of Arte Maya, is a master carver
there was pottery everywhere...some kitschy, but lots of gems too......
molded, painted with colored slips, fired, ready to go.......
clay is better when it is aged in water....
green ware
Andre showing us some of the local clay.
fresh clay.....
All the pottery is molded.
probably need quite a few more bundles of wood to fire that kiln....probably takes a while to get enough....
wood burning kiln at Arte Maya, Ticul......
our room was in a fan palm jungle...there was even a Mayan ruin on the property.....
I loved our room at the Flycatcher Inn......
Flycatcher Inn,...breakfast on the veranda........
We were directed by the lovely owners of the beautiful, "Flycatcher Inn" of St. Elena, to make sure we went to visit Andre, a renowned and prolific potter in Ticul, a town not far from the famous, Uxmal, Mayan ruin. Andre was busy working on an intricate carving but he graciously stopped to show us around. When I told him I was a potter, he eagerly directed us to the very back of the building where the pottery was made. The amount of work was staggering in the studio. It was all fired by wood that was gathered by bundles in the surrounding countryside, usually by a pedicab or bicycle. We saw villagers all over the Yucatan out collecting wood that way. The kiln vitrifies the local clay just fine. All of the pottery is molded. There were hundreds of molds in the studio. The pottery made here is sold all over the Yucatan peninsula. We only had so much room in our carry on bags, so we had to pare down the choices.  Dog face, and squatting man, came home with us.......

I am so enjoying your adventure in Mexico. We haven't been in a few years and this is wonderful to see.

You should write for a travel magazine! All your stories and pictures (and the art you brought home) make me want to visit Mexico again. Though I need to go with someone more into exploring I think. This Inn looks wonderful and I love these pottery pieces.

O my, you make me want to dig out my digital shots of our tours into the Mayan territory near Belize...where I met a sculptor who created sculptures similar to yours...so lovely to meet the creator in person!
