Our newly adopted dog, Macey, came to us with some psychological problems. She was snarling and nasty to other dogs and sometimes people. At six years old, this aggression was not acceptable and very worrisome. Then I read a book by Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer. I realized that I was not being the strong leader of my pack of two dogs. Macey was confused by my lack of leadership and instinctively fighting for that role herself. Cesar explains how dogs need a leader. They don't aspire to be one but if leadership is not shown they have no other choice but to take it on themselves. Leaders are calmly assertive and control the pack with their energy. He recommends running with your dogs. So that is what I do every day now. Macey is leashed on the right of me and Jose is leashed on the left. We run with me in the lead and them beside or behind me. We run at least twice a day, for about half an hour each time. We can hardly believe that Macey is the same dog. She knows I am leader now and has relaxed into being a submissive follower. Her and Jose have bonded into a pack and there are no more fights. All that exercise keeps everybody relaxed. Harmony is our normal state of being. It's my new workout....I run with the dogs.....
